Happy Independence Day
Have you ever thought of writing your
own personal Declaration of Independence? Take some time and imagine what you
want to be free of?
You may want to break free of Gremlins, grudges,
regrets and resentments, addictions, compulsions, negative thinking, and
procrastination..... free of self-limiting thoughts, people, places and things
that don't call forth your best self. I challenge you to imagine what you'd like
to declare yourself free of this month and write your personal declaration of
independence. Then read it every day with conviction and expect results. Send it
to me. I'm curious.
Richard Carson's book, Taming Your
Gremlin - A Surprisingly Simple Method of Getting Out of Your Own Way will
go along way toward understanding the Self Saboteur (Gremlin) that lives inside
your head. The first task is to identify the Gremlin, give it a name and write
about it.
Rick Carson simply defines the Gremlin as "the narrator in
your head. This Gremlin tells you who and how you are, he defines and interprets
your every experience. He wants you to accept his interpretations as reality and
his goal, from moment to moment, day to day, is to squelch the natural, vibrant
you within. He wants you to feel bad and will go to great length of do so. He is
intent on making you miserable.
The first step in taming your gremlin
is to simply notice. By naming your Gremlin and bringing it out of the shadow,
it loses its power to dominate your life. Notice the conversation that's
continually going on in your head. Ask yourself if it's true? Most often, it's
not.
Notice other options. What could the conversation in your head be
instead of the Gremlin's? Don't judge, condemn or criticize the gremlin. Just
notice its conversation and choose differently. Do this over and over again
until you are in control of those thoughts and the gremlin has to go find a new
job elsewhere.
The bigger your dreams and the bigger your vision, the
larger the Gremlin seems to be. I have a fierce Gremlin and I've tamed it quite
a bit in the 6 years that I've been coaching and being coached.
