Claim Your Life Now June 2007

    Paris.jpg Greetings!

What a month! I went to a Coaching Conference, a family reunion and then came back to watch myself on national television.

I have to take time to catch my breath. Writing this newsletter will give me that time and space.

    Watching Myself on National Television
    Bill Moyer's Journal

Bill Moyers interviewed Maxine Hong Kingston who edited the anthology entitled, Veterans of War, Veterans of Peace. The anthology contains the prologue of my book, Grief Denied, A Vietnam Widow's Story. I was fortunate to be one of the writers featured on the Bill Moyers Journal on PBS May 25.

I invited a few close friends over to watch the show with me. I knew I'd never stay up that late if I didn't have company. It aired at 10 p.m.

As I watched the show, I felt deep respect for the woman whose life was depicted there. She exhibited great wisdom, strength and resilience.

A person like me doesn't often get a chance to see herself on national TV. I'm sure this glow I'm feeling will fade; but for now, I'm enjoying increased feelings of self-compassion.

The show dealt with the topic of writing and how writing can transform us. If you are interested, visit the Bill Moyers Journal www.pbs.org/moyers where you can view the show.

Several other writers (Vietnam Veterans) were featured on the show as well as Maxine Hong Kingston. I felt proud to be in such great company. Left to my own resources, I could never have maneuvered this. It was clearly an act of grace by God. I'm grateful for the opportunity to share my process of healing through writing. My wish is that it will inspire others to write.

facewater Rushing Through The Check Out Lane
Can we all please SLOW DOWN?

Do you often feel rushed in the checkout lanes of retail stores? I do - especially at Safeway and Costco. There's never enough time to write down the amount of my purchase, collect my receipt, put my wallet and ATM card away and leave. I often forget, misplace or lose things when I'm rushed, and I get very irritable and crabby.

At the end of the month when my checkbook won't balance, it's because I haven't written down all my expenditures.

In the 1950's my father ran a general merchandise store, Elmer A. Laurent & Sons. He carried on conversations with each customer. They talked about politics, the weather and local gossip. There are still a few stores like my father's. The clerks at my local Ace Hardware Store are not in a hurry. They take time to show me around and answer any and all questions. That's refreshing.

The human connection is missing in so many instances in our fast-paced world.

Let's all slow down and look someone in the eye for a change and see how that affects our day. See what impact your slowing down might have on others.

What might we be missing as we rush through our days?

"If you realized that the nurtured spiritual part of yourself would accompany you on your eternal journey and that everything that you have labored so hard to accumulate would vanish the instant you depart this world, would it alter your daily agenda?" - Walter Cooper

    seineparis Clean, Clear, Complete, Delete

I have a daily habit of getting rid of things. I keep an empty box available to throw things in that I want to get rid of.

Everything contains energy and when I let go of things I no longer need, love or use, I feel a surge of energy which I can then use for new projects.

A mentality of "scarcity" and "lack" often goes hand-in- hand with excessive clutter and incompletion.

Incomplete tasks drain us of energy. When I am able to complete tasks, the benefits of doing so includes increased vitality and energy, focus, confidence, and optimism. Even if we are not thinking about them, they drain us of energy. Look at those outstanding items on your "to do" list. Do them or delete them from your list. Don't carry them forward. Perhaps the task holds no energy for you anymore.

What activities, friends and possessions are you hanging on to that you don't love anymore? Clear the deck to increase vitality.

Visual Clutter is distracting. Eliminate visual clutter. Our eyes and minds are caught by too many distractions. Think of how refreshing it is to see the horizon. What does that scene of a horizon do to your mind? Is it refreshing? If so, create a similar scene in your home.
